Gamma-Ray Bursts and the Earth: Exploration of Atmospheric, Biological, Climatic and Biogeochemical Effects

چکیده
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are likely to have made a number of significant impacts on the Earth during the last billion years. The gamma radiation from a burst within a few kpc would quickly deplete much of the Earth’s protective ozone layer, allowing an increase in solar UVB radiation reaching the surface. This radiation is harmful to life, damaging DNA and causing sunburn. In addition, NO2 produced in the atmosphere would cause a decrease in visible sunlight reaching the surface and could cause global cooling. Nitric acid rain could stress portions of the biosphere, but the increased nitrate deposition could be helpful to land plants. We have used a two-dimensional atmospheric model to investigate the effects on the Earth’s atmosphere of GRBs delivering a range of fluences, at various latitudes, at the equinoxes and solstices, and at different times of day. We have estimated DNA damage levels caused by increased solar UVB radiation, reduction in solar visible light due to NO2 opacity, and deposition of nitrates through rainout of HNO3. For the “typical” nearest burst in the last billion years, we find globally averaged ozone depletion up to 38%. Localized depletion reaches as much as 74%. Significant global depletion (at least 10%) persists up to about 7 years after the burst. Biogeochemical exploration in Sari Gunay gold deposit, Northwestern Iran
Biogeochemistry is a useful tool for assessing geochemical dispersion patterns. Sari Gunay epithermal gold deposit was selected in order to assess the application of biogeochemical exploration for gold in northwestern Iran. In this study, four sites were sampled in a profile perpendicular to mineralized vein with a control site two km far-off mineralized vein. A sample from each dominant plant ...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts and terrestrial planetary atmospheres
We describe results of modeling the effects on Earth-like planets of longduration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) within a few kiloparsecs. A primary effect is generation of nitrogen oxide compounds which deplete ozone. Ozone depletion leads to an increase in solar UVB radiation at the surface, enhancing DNA damage, particularly in marine microorganisms such as phytoplankton. In addition, we expect inc...
متن کاملA Search Technique for Weak and Long-duration ., Gamma-ray Bursts from Background Model Residuals
We report a planned search technique for Gamma-Ray Bursts too weak to trigger the on-board threshold. The technique is to search residuals from a physically based background model used for analysis of point sources by the Earth occultation method. Searching residuals (as opposed to raw data) minimizes false triggers from occultation edges and many other effects which lead to a rapid variation i...

Different methods have been developed for mineral exploration so far, amongst which biological-based methods known as geomicrobiological studies are of the most recent ones. Geomicrobiology as an interdisciplinary approach has achieved great progresses during the past two decades and involves the study of microbes in a number of fundamental geological processes, both in the past and present. Th...
متن کاملA lookup table to compute high energy cosmic ray effects on terrestrial atmospheric chemistry
A variety of events such as gamma-ray bursts and supernovae may expose the Earth to an increased flux of high-energy cosmic rays, with potentially important effects on the biosphere. Existing atmospheric chemistry software does not have the capability of incorporating the effects of substantial cosmic ray flux above 10 GeV . An atmospheric code, the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center two-dimensio...
